What is Counselling?
A chance to explore.
Counselling is a ‘talking therapy’. It is an opportunity for you to explore troubles, hurts or other issues with a trained professional in a safe and secure environment.
The counsellor is trained to listen with empathy, seeing the world from your perspective. Counsellors do not usually give advice but instead help you find your own solutions.
Counselling can be short term or on a longer term basis.
Counselling takes place in a confidential environment: whatever you say to the counsellor remains between you and them (except in exceptional circumstances which will be explained to you).
It is standard practice for counsellors to have supervision. This involves discussing cases with a supervisor to ensure that the counsellor is doing all they can to help and support you. These discussions are also confidential.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions a person needs is dependent on each individual’s needs. Many people find six to eight sessions is just right whilst others benefit from fewer or more. Some benefit from longer term counselling. There are chances to regularly review your progress to ensure that counselling is still benefiting you and that your needs are being met. Sessions are 50 minutes long.
How does counselling end?
Counselling can be ended at any time that either you or the counsellor feels is appropriate. However, there may be times during the counselling process where you feel you may be too emotionally distressed or challenged to continue. At these points it can be tempting to stop counselling abruptly. If this happens, I would like to encourage you to talk to me first as it may be that there are underlying issues that need to be addressed.
My role is to create a safe, warm and non-judgemental environment in which you can explore your issues and discover who you are: to meet you wherever you are on your personal journey.
Some people have all that they need to “do life” and face their difficulties on their own. Many others need some empathetic support along the way. My belief is that everyone is valuable and has the right to feel that way. I also believe that everybody needs help sometimes and sometimes it is helpful for that help and support to come from outside their immediate situation. It is a real privilege to have had the opportunity to do this work.
